Orange-level air quality advisory back in effect for South Thompson area

KAMLOOPS — A thick blanket of wildfire smoke has prompted an Orange-level air quality warning from Environment Canada for the South Thompson, Kamloops, Merritt, 100 Mile, Shuswap, Vernon and Fraser Canyon areas on Friday (July 31).

Environment Canada officials said the smoke is likely to impact the region for the next 24 to 48 hours, but conditions can change quickly.

“Monitor the situation for any wildfires near your area at EmergencyInfoBC. Follow all emergency announcements relevant to your location,” said Environment Canada officials.

“The next update will be available on August 1, 2026 and made available on the Province’s Air Quality Warnings webpage.”

The weather agency said high levels of smoke exposure can pose a risk to everyone’s health, regarless of age or health status.

“Avoid strenuous outdoor activities until the warning has ended. Stay indoors in a space with cleaner air,” said Environment Canada.

“Some people are more likely to be negatively impacted by smoke. This includes people with lung and heart conditions, pregnant individuals, infants and young children, people aged 65 and older, and anyone whose health is affected by a chronic condition or acute illness.”
