Extra caution urged on ‘low-volume’ Highway 24 amid Cariboo Highway closure

100 MILE HOUSE, B.C. — Residents are being asked to drive with extra care when traveling on Highway 24 between the Clearwater and 100 Mile House areas. 

BC Highway Patrol says its officers are focused on stopping excessive speeding, distracted and impaired driving and unsafe passing. 

The public call comes as Highway 97 from Clinton to 100 Mile remains closed due to the nearby Pear Lake wildfire, forcing drivers to take a detour via Highway 1 from Cache Creek to Kamloops, Highway 5 North from Kamloops to Little Fort and Highway 24 from Little Fort to 93 Mile. 

“Highway 24 is typically a low-volume rural corridor and it’s not designed for a lot of traffic going fast,” Sgt. Michael McLaughlin states in a news release issued Thursday (July 30). “We’re trying to prevent collisions here, so BC Highway Patrol officers are increasing our presence on #24 alongside Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement officers.
