The fire, which sparked on July 17, has grown to more than 668 square kilometres as of Wednesday.

It has prompted evacuation orders from the Village of Clinton, two regional districts and three First Nations, under the advice of Moreira and his BCWS colleagues.

“The chief reason to put those in place is for everybody’s safety – not only the public’s safety but also first responders’ safety,” said Moreira. “Specifically with that situation, when those crews needed to go rescue that person, it took them away from their ability to respond to the fire in the area and protect other values on the landscape – people’s structures and homes.”
