Village of Clinton water reaches critical low as firefighters battle Pear Lake wildfire

CLINTON, B.C. — The Village of Clinton says its water supply has reached a critical low as firefighters work to keep the massive Pear Lake wildfire from engulfing the community.

While there is an Evacuation Order in place, the Village said those who chose to stay must stop all outdoor and non-essential water use.

In a statement posted to social media, local officials said the Village needs to do what it can to preserve what remains of the community’s water supply to support firefighting efforts.

This comes as the region is in the midst of a prolonged drought, with little rain in the forecast.

The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) said the the expected hot, dry weather over the coming days is expected to intensify the flames.

“Wind combined with the underlying drought conditions will play a large factor in increasing fire behaviour,” said the BCWS.

“Fuels remain heavily impacted by drought throughout the area and are highly susceptible to increased fire behaviour.”

The Village said firefighters are working to protect of the community, and in a statement on Sunday, officials said there has been no additional structure loss within the community.

Meanwhile, the Thomson Nicola Regional District (TNRD) is planning an evacuation of 70 Mile house and the surrounding area at 10 a.m. on Monday (July 10) in anticipation of the fire’s growth.
