Tk’emlúps, City of Kamloops protecting West End site of ancestral remains discovery

KAMLOOPS — Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc says it is working with the City of Kamloops to protect a site in the city’s West End where ancestral remains were discovered earlier this month.

In a news release, Kúkwpi7 Rosanne Casimir says a member of the public reported the remains to the RCMP on July 15.

“Out of respect for the community, the ancestor, cultural protocols and the ongoing process, no additional details are available at this time,” notes the release.

The location of the remains are not disclosed and Tk’emlúps asks the public to avoid the area, saying it is “currently closed”.

“The protection of our cultural heritage is a fundamental responsibility of Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc. Our people have lived throughout Secwepemcúlecw since time immemorial and we remain committed to ensuring our heritage, cultural laws and traditional practices are respected,” said Casimir.
