“My goals were definitely higher than what I achieved this weekend, but I’m really happy with the overall outcome of the meet,” said Wittal, who recently broke one of Summer McIntosh’s records.  

Wittal won gold in the 100-metre freestyle and 50-metre butterfly, silver in the 100m butterfly and bronze in the 100m backstroke and 200m medley.  

She broke her own club record and finished atop the podium in the 100m freestyle (1:00.03), but was not totally content with the result because her goal was to post a time under one minute.  

“I think this provincials was just the start and there will be more to come and that, hopefully, winter provincials can go even better,” Wittal said.  

Molly Brookes was the other Kamloops medallist, earning a silver medal in the 17-and-over girls’ 100m freestyle with a time of 1:00.61.  

The moment was special for Brookes, who reached the provincial podium for the first time in her seven-year tenure with the Classics.  

“It was really exciting and I wasn’t really expecting it because there are a lot of very fast girls who are my age, but I was really happy with my result,” said Brookes, the South Kamloops Secondary graduate who will swim for Brock University this fall. “My teammates were all really excited. I was really excited. It was just great.”  

Brookes, Wittal, Ryder Crichton, Maci Dixon, Haolin Li, Brooklyn McCabe, Nash McCaleb, Quinn Meredith, Elise Percy and Tenley Post of the Classics qualified for provincials.  

Wittal set club records in the 13- and 14-year-old girls’ division in the 200m individual medley (2:26.49), 100m freestyle (1:00.03), 100m butterfly (1:04.70) and 50m butterfly (28.49).  

Crichton, 17, set two club records: 15- to 17-year-old boys’ 200m breaststroke (2:26.35) and open boys 200m breaststroke (2:26.35).  

Post, 12, set one club record, recording a time of 19:14.41 in the 1,500m freestyle in the 11- and 12-year-old girls’ division.  

All of the above are long-course-metres records.  

More than 480 swimmers from 36 clubs (33 from B.C. and one each from Alberta, Ontario and Quebec) were in Kamloops for the meet.
