Merritt ER reopens ahead of scheduled ending sudden second closure in under a week

MERRITT, B.C. — UPDATE (2:00 p.m.): The sudden closure of the emergency room in Merritt was shorter than expected as Interior Health said it was able to secure last-minute coverage.
The ER at the Nicola Valley Hospital reopened at 2:00 p.m. Sunday (July 19) instead of 7:00 p.m. as originally announced. That means what was supposed to be a 13 hour closure in Merritt – that began at 6:00 a.m. – lasted for eight hours.
EARLIER: Merritt residents are in the midst of the second sudden emergency department closure in less than a week, marking the fifth time the community’s ER has closed this year.
In an announcement made shortly before the closure began, Interior Health said the ER at the Nicola Valley Hospital will be closed for 13 hours on Sunday (July 19), from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
