LILLOOET, B.C. — A wildfire burning nearly nine kilometres south of Lillooet is being held.

In an update Tuesday (July 14) afternoon, the BC Wildfire Service says the Riley Creek wildfire is projected to remain within its current 72-hectare perimeter, based on fuel and weather conditions and resource availability.

The suspected cause of the wildfire is lightning. It was discovered on June 24. No evacuation orders or alerts have been issued due to the Riley Creek wildfire.

“This fire has been mainly burning Rank 1 and Rank 2, meaning a smouldering ground fire with some visible open flame, confined within the fire’s perimeter,” the wildfire service states. “More smoke is likely to be observed on days where the combination of stronger winds and a rise in temperatures have increased fire activity.”

The Riley Creek wildfire is burning upslope into rocks and snow at high elevation. The wildfire service says helicopters assigned to the scene are not actively bucketing.

Further north, the French Bar Creek wildfire remains burning out of control. It’s measured at around 1,246 hectares in size.

Further south, the Brunswick Complex of fires near Boston Bar are wildfires of note, with an estimated combined size of more than 19,000 hectares.

The wildfire service notes there was an increase in fire activity and behaviour within the Brunswick Complex on Tuesday. On top of projected elevated fire activity and behaviour Wednesday, the wildfire service says there’s a risk of dry lightning and stronger winds on Thursday

Additionally, smoke from the Brunswick Complex continues to be pushed by winds blowing to the northeast.
