Kamloops Legion to unveil veterans crosswalk as part of century celebration

KAMLOOPS — The Royal Canadian Legion began 100 years ago in Winnipeg, as a way for World War I veterans to socialize and share stories of things only fellow veterans could truly understand.

In the century since, the Legion has grown across Canada, now with more than 300,000 members. While the days of sharing stories from the Great War and World War II have begun to fade, the importance of the Legion has not.

“We do a lot of fundraising. We give a lot of money back to the community through organizations that we raise money for,” said Kamloops Legion President Mike Young. “That is a lot of what the legion has sort of evolved into – more of a community type organization. Even though we still advocate for veterans, we still help veterans, we are here for the veterans, we’ve become more of a community club.”

Next Friday (July 17), the Legion in Kamloops will host a celebration, complete with an open house at the Legion along Lansdowne Street and the unveiling of a new veterans crosswalk at 12:00 p.m., open for all members of the public to attend.

“We’ve got a veterans crosswalk that is being put in at Third and Battle Street, and we are planning the grand unveiling for that, a little bit of a ceremony for that,” said Young. “After that, we are back here, we have an open house, we will have some displays set up, we will have a dinner that evening and we have a stage show upstairs. We have a full day planned.”
