Netflix has announced Big Chicken: A Fast Food Conspiracy, a documentary starring British comedian Mo Gilligan. The feature-length film follows Gilligan eating fried chicken three times daily for 28 consecutive days. Debuting August 5, the doc traces fried chicken’s origins from South London to the United States, examining the “social, economic and industrial forces” behind mass consumption. Gilligan also confronts racial stereotypes associated with the dish and explores cultural appropriation in today’s market. The project draws obvious comparisons to Morgan Spurlock’s 2004 Oscar-nominated Super Size Me and its 2017 sequel, which also focused on the chicken industry. Netflix did not respond to comment requests regarding the similarities. Spurlock died in 2024 from cancer-related complications.
