WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — Two drivers and a Williams Lake RCMP officer were injured in a pair of vehicle collisions that temporarily closed a stretch of Highway 97.

DriveBC first reported of two vehicle incidents on Highway 97 north of Williams Lake, one north of Egg Lake and another near Bull Mountain Road, shortly before 11:00 p.m. Saturday (July 4). The stretch of Highway 97 was closed until shortly after 2:00 a.m. Sunday.

Williams Lake RCMP say officers responded to a collision between a semi-truck and a passenger vehicle at around 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Both drivers were sent to hospital for treatment, with the semi-truck driver suffering minor injuries and the other driver suffering serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

While the investigation is ongoing, RCMP do not believe criminality was a factor in the collision.

Elsewhere, while responding to the collision, a Williams Lake RCMP officer lost control of their vehicle and went down an embankment.

In a news release issued Monday (July 6), RCMP say the officer was sent to hospital for assessment and treatment. They have since been released from hospital, and they’re expected to make a full recovery.

Police say early indications suggest that weather and road conditions may have contributed to the officer’s collision.

“I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the first responders, members of the public, and all of the health care staff at Cariboo Memorial Hospital who assisted our officer during and after this incident,” Williams Lake RCMP S/Sgt. Brad McKinnon says. “The care, professionalism, and support shown throughout this event were greatly appreciated by our officer, their family, and the entire detachment.”

Anyone who witnessed the collisions or has dash camera video from the area is asked to contact Williams Lake RCMP at 250-392-6211.
