CSRD planning new Shannon Beach dock

SALMON ARM, B.C. — The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) is in the planning stage of a new dock for Shannon Beach in Electoral Area C.

CSRD officials said this comes after the previous dock was removed due to deterioration and safety concerns.

A review of the dock’s location also showed that it was too close to the designated swimming areas, which posed safety risks for boaters and swimmers.

The CSRD said a new location that meets the required setbacks from the swim area has been proposed, however, it will be less convenient for access.

“We have looked at options, and the best one appears to be west of the swim area, just outside of the 30-metre required setback from the swim line. Unfortunately, it is in a rocky area and the trail to the dock is not as convenient,” says Derek Sutherland, CSRD Community and Protective Services General Manager.

“There are also concerns with the dock being there because of the increased parking it generates. The parking area is increasingly overwhelmed and parking on the road is creating hazards.”

The CSRD said provincial tenure approval delays could impose a delay on the project for up to two years, but the regional government will continue project planning the meantime.
