Property taxes, homeowner grant applications due this Thursday, July 2

KAMLOOPS — There is not long left before the taxman comes calling as property taxes are due by this Thursday, July 2.

Tax notices were mailed out in May, and the city says a 10 per cent penalty will apply to all payments made starting Friday (July 3) with no exceptions. That’s also the deadline for home owner grant applications to be made directly to the province.

Taxes can be paid through online banking or by Visa or Mastercard (a 2.75 per cent convenience fee applies for credit card payments). Payments can also be made at Kamloops City Hall, which will be open until 6:00 p.m. Thursday or at the Tournament Capital Centre between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

Both City Hall and the TCC are closed today for the Canada Day statutory holiday.

Municipal taxes are going up 5.7 per cent this year, but the city also collects taxes on behalf of other levels of government like the Thompson-Nicola Regional District, the Thompson Regional Hospital District and school taxes for the provincial government.

Earlier this month, the city also warned residents of a new scam that was making the rounds after a resident received a series of text messages from someone who was impersonating mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson, offering “a special discount on their property taxes.”

“This is the first for us. We’ve never heard of this,” David Hallinan, the City’s Director of Corporate Services, told CFJC Today at the time. “I think it really goes to show that you always have to be vigilant in terms of text messages that are coming and how organizations communicate with people.
