One youth killed, another injured in crash near Lumby

LUMBY, B.C. — A youth was killed after being hit by a vehicle near Lumby.

Police responded to a rural property near the North Okanagan community for a report of a crash involving a pedestrian at around 11:50 p.m. Saturday (June 27).

Officers arrived on the scene and learned that two youths had been hit by a pick up truck. One of the victims, a 15-year-old from Lumby, succumbed to their injuries at the scene. The other youth was taken to hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the pickup, a 16-year-old from Vernon, fled the scene but was later located and arrested. They were later released pending a future court date.

“There were numerous youth present at this gathering who, not only saw this tragic incident, but captured it on cellphone” Cpl. Tania Finn, Media Relations Officer with the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, stated.

“Investigators were able to identify, locate and arrest the driver that night.”

Mounties said the youth faced several potential criminal charges related to the incident, though did not provide specifics on what those would be.

The B.C. Coroners Service was tasked with conducting an independent investigating into the death. The police’s investigation was also ongoing and anyone with information related to the death was asked to contact the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP at 250-545-7171.

The family of the deceased was notified of the incident and were receiving grief support.
