KAMLOOPS — Residents and businesses wanting to contribute to the Build Kamloops project now have an incentive to do so.

The City of Kamloops announced it has partnered with the BC Interior Community Foundation for an initiative in which donors can donate funds directly to Build Kamloops costs and receive charitable tax receipts.

In a news release issued Friday (June 26), the city says donors can choose to contribute to the overall Build Kamloops initiative, or isolate their donations to specific projects, such as the Kamloops Centre for the Arts or the arena multiplex in Dufferin.

“Build Kamloops reflects the vibrancy, creativity and energy of our community,” Wenda Noonan, BC ICF development and communications director says. “A performing arts centre and arena multiplex will create spaces where people can gather, perform and compete. We are proud to work alongside the City of Kamloops to help generous residents, businesses and supporters bring these projects to life, and support spaces that will serve Kamloops for generations.”

The Build Kamloops project is notably being funded partially from borrowing. Kamloops authorized city staff to borrow up to $140 million to construct a performing arts centre downtown and up to $135 million to build a four-sheet arena multiplex in Dufferin. The city received support from the Kamloops electorate via the alternative approval process in which less than 10 per cent of registered voters formally responded with their opposition to Build Kamloops.

However, the city says Build Kamloops is also being funded through donations, fundraising and sponsorships, as well as the city’s reserves, operating budgets and non-competitive grant programs. The city adds there are ongoing efforts to apply for provincial and federal grants.

The city says an independent evaluation estimated nearly $40 million in fundraising potential ahead of Build Kamloops’ launch.

In addition to the performing arts centre and arena multiplex, the Build Kamloops project consists of a new leisure pool, a curling and racquet sport complexnew indoor field space and a new all-ages community centre. It also includes a new seniors centre at Cottonwood Avenuerenovations to the Kamloops indoor soccer dome and a new daycare at the repurposing of the Parkview Activity Centre into a new childcare centre.

Work is underway at the site of the Kamloops Centre for the Arts at Fourth Avenue and Seymour Street while work on the arena multiplex in Dufferin is expected to begin later this year.
