KAMLOOPS — This weekend is a scheduled bye week for Kamloops United, who are in the final stretch of their season. Both the men’s and women’s teams have identical records of 1-8-2, good for eighth place in the BC Premier League. Although a chance for a league title is long gone, both teams want to close out the season strong.

The Kamloops United women’s squad has some time to regroup after its 3-1 loss to Unity FC on Friday (June 12). It ends a two-game point streak for the team and although there were no victories in that stretch, positives were shown.

“We had two ties and then one loss last weekend but the two ties were great results for us,” Aliyah Deneault told CFJC Sports. “We lost to those two teams previosuly and then came back and tied them so it was great just to see the progress and not be consistently losing to those teams. It just shows as we work together more, maybe the next few we can start getting more wins.”

The draws against the TSS Rovers and Langley United a testimony of the progression of younger players – learning from those earlier-season losses, executing in practice and earning points in the standings.

“It’s been a good year. Although we have a lot of young players and a lot of new players, we’ve been developing well every week,” said Deneault.

“It’s predominantly young players starting so I feel like that speaks to it,” added Anika Black. “A couple of them making Team of the Week – it’s awesome to see.”

United still have three fixtures left, hitting the road next weekend for a matchup with Burnaby FC then returning to Hillside for the final two games of the season. Despite being near the bottom of the table, the motivation is still high down the final stretch.

“I want to win some games,” said Black. “I really want to win – that’s probably my main goal.”
