Kamloops United looks to finish BC Premier League season strong

KAMLOOPS — With three games left on the schedule, Kamloops United FC is in the final stretch of its season. Both the men’s and women’s teams sit in eighth place in the table with identical records. Despite their position in league standings, both teams want to close out the season strong.

Kamloops United told CFJC Sports at the beginning of the season the team would prioritize the development of its players. The process hasn’t come without its growing pains – the women with only one win on the season and the men held winless until an 87th-minute goal lifted it to a 3-2 victory over Unity FC last Friday (June 12).

“Seeing everything coming to fruition and getting that first win was awesome,” team captain Elijah Dos Santos told CFJC. “Honestly the whole weekend, I was waiting for them to upload it so we could go back and watch it. All of that work we’ve been putting in day in and day out, it’s been showing now. And now getting our first win, it’s like a monkey off our shoulders. It feels really, really good.”

Veterans like Dos Santos knew going into the season it would be a tougher go than usual, but seeing young players like Grade 12 student Will Edwards start to show their potential against older competition is rewarding in itself.

“Will had his first couple starts earlier in the season and then against Unity, got a start and played outstanding. Unreal. He was torching it down the wing, taking guys on, getting chances left, right and centre – and he’s just coming out of high school,” said Dos Santos.

“In the last year, I feel like I’ve developed a lot quicker than other years,” added Edwards. “It’s always a good feeling and a pretty big eye-opener to see how playing at a higher level can really make your game go higher.”

Edwards has seen the pitch 10 times in his first BC Premier League season, slowly gaining the trust of his coaches and teammates as the year has gone on. The support from the older players reassures the young midfielder he belongs.

“It’s been pretty good. I find I’m getting a lot of support from everybody else on the team so it’s always pretty easy to feel good and not to be too neavous about it and not take it as seriously as I have to, which makes it a lot easier to play,” said Edwards.

With only three matches left, a chance for a league title is long gone, but at Hillside Stadium, there’s another goal – to close out the season strong.

“In the locker room (prior to last Friday’s game), [coach Darren Woloshen] said he wants us to get at least two wins in the next four games,” said Edwards.

“(We need) two wins so we’re 50 per cent there – we got one already, one draw and we can allow one loss… but no loss. No more losses. We’re going to keep our heads down, keep working,” said the captain.

United will have some time to tune up before their next match. The teams are on a bye before hitting the road for games against Burnaby on June 27.
