Incumbent Middleton to run for re-election to Kamloops council

KAMLOOPS — Another incumbent Kamloops councillor has announced plans to seek another term in office this October.

“I believe we need thoughtful leadership, sound counsel, respectful dialogue and a continued focus on building a city that future generations will be proud to call home,” said Margot Middleton, who announced her bid for re-election at McArthur Island Wednesday (June 17).

Middleton was surrounded by family, friends and supporters, saying her focus will be on strengthening local governance, responsible growth, collaborative leadership and building a strong future through initiatives like Build Kamloops.

“We have a huge deficit of city facilities and spaces – community, sporting, culture,” said Middleton. “The city has grown substantially and we are in catch-up mode. We should have been catching up 20 years ago and [this council] did. Now it may seen like it’s become very compressed in time frame and ambitious for what we want to do but I don’t think we can wait out another 20 or 30 years.”

First elected in 2022, Middleton says she learned a lot during her first term in office and began thinking about re-election a few months ago. While there have been ups and downs, she feels she has plenty more to offer.

“I know at times it seems like there’s been a lot of… stuff going on, but it hasn’t stopped the enjoyment of being on city council. I really like to give back to the community and this is an opportunity and a way for me to do that.”

Middleton is the seventh member of Kamloops council to announce a re-election bid. Councillors Katie Neustaeter and Kelly Hall are the only ones left who have yet to announce their intentions publicly.

The civic election will be held on Saturday, October 17.
