SALMON ARM B.C. — Four people have been hospitalized following a head-on collision with a semi-truck on Saturday along Highway 1, east of Kangaroo Road near Salmon Arm.

Salmon Arm RCMP said officers responded to the collision shortly after 7 a.m. and found a rental Toyota Corolla and a semi truck with a trailer in the eastbound ditch,

“The Corolla had four occupants, with one able to exit on their own. The other three were trapped and were extricated using the jaws of life,” said Salmon Arm RCMP officials.

“All four Corolla occupants were transported to hospital and believed to be in stable but critical condition.”

Police said the initial investigation suggested the Corolla was heading east and crossed the centre line attempting to pass a semi in front of it.

However, the Corolla’s driver was unable to complete the pass before colliding with a westbound semi truck with a trailer.

“The Corolla apparently spun off the road into the east bound ditch, with the engine also ejecting,” said RCMP officials.

“The semi with trailer appeared to lose control and went off road left into the east bound side ditch.”

The semi truck driver was uninjured and cooperative with police investigators.

Highway 1 between Salmon Arm and Sicamous was closed for most of the day while first responders were on the scene.
