Search underway for inaugural Kamloops Community Land Trust executive director

KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Community Land Trust Foundation is searching for its first full-time executive director who will be tasked with helming the organization working to provide and preserve attainable housing opportunities.

The non-profit signed a long-term service agreement in April that formally established the foundation, about three years after it was incorporated. Now, the search is on for the person who will help shape the land trust’s long-term direction. Applications are due by June 30.

“We are looking right now for an executive director who wants to lead this,” board chair Colin O’Leary said. “We’re looking for someone who is interested in evaluating properties, doing attainable housing development projects and evaluation all of this sort of information – really shaping the future of what attainable and affordable housing in Kamloops will look like.”

The Kamloops Community Land Trust is working on its first project – an 85-unit purpose-built rental development at the site of the former Northbridge Hotel on Tranquille Road. O’Leary said work is also underway to acquire land for future developments that will help address needs across the entire community.

“Part of their role will be evaluating potential projects in the future, making sure projects are delivered on time and addressing community needs,” O’Leary added. “This is a position that is very dynamic and it’s really helping shape the future of Kamloops.”

This work comes as the City of Kamloops failed to reach housing targets set by the provincial government for the second straight year in 2025. The city is required to build 4,236 new housing units by September 2028 and the city has told the province it believes the targets are not realistic.

In May, the province proactively granted Kamloops an extension to the year-three housing targets because of this October’s municipal election. The city was required to build another 819 housing units by Sept. 30, for a three-year total of 2,233, but they now have until Dec. 15 to meet that target.
