Sonis scores three goals as Canada whips Costa Rica 6-0 in women’s friendly

CARTAGO — Janine Sonis scored three goals, including one on a penalty in the 54th minute, and Canada women’s soccer team defeated host Costa Rica 6-0 in an international friendly in Cartago on Tuesday.

Forward Evelyne Viens gave Canada a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute, while Jordyn Huitema (84th minute) and Mimi Alidou (two minutes into second-half stoppage time) finished the scoring, as the visitors dominated the match, scoring four times in the second half and controlling possession for 68 per cent of the game.

Maria Paula Coto of Costa Rica received a red card for violent conduct in the 53rd minute.

Canada was called for 12 of the game’s 22 fouls, while Costa Rica received one yellow and one red card.
