KAMLOOPS — GoByBike week is back in the Interior of B.C. and Kamloops, encouraging residents to leave their cars at home and choose active transportation methods instead.

The annual province-wide event promotes healthier lifestyles, sustainability and community connection through biking and other forms of active travel.

Organizers say more than 320 riders have already signed up in Kamloops this year, including 83 first-time participants.

“We just want to get people pull on their bikes and get outside and be active because biking is healthy. It’s fun and it’s economical, so you can save some money, but it’s also really good for the environment.” Jaimi Garbutt, sustainability educator with the City of Kamloops says

While the event is called GoByBike Week, organizers say it goes beyond just cycling. Scooters, skateboards and rollerblades are also encouraged as part of active transportation.

“You’re getting that physical exercise, which is obviously great for your physical health, but it’s also good for your mental health as well. We just want people out and about and being active.” Garbutt says.

The event also aims to encourage long-term transportation changes by showing residents the benefits of using alternatives to vehicles.

“When you’re not in a vehicle, we’re taking more vehicles off the roads – there’s less congestion, less emissions going into our atmosphere,” Garbutt adds. “You’re also reducing greenhouse gases, which is going to help fight climate change.”

At Riverside Park, Tourism Kamloops is supporting the event by offering a free bike valet service, allowing riders to safely park their bikes while exploring the city or taking part in activities throughout the week.

“If you’re participating in the go by bike week, you can come up, talk to us, and we will give you your slip of paper to fill out.” Gillian Goodrich and Janessa Rushka with Tourism Kamloops Street Team say.

Participants can log their rides throughout the week, and are eligible to win one of three local prize packages, along with larger provincial prizes, including an electric bike.

Go By Bike Week continues throughout this week across British Columbia until Friday (June 5).
