Vehicle-ready replacement for Red Bridge 1 of 3 options being considered by province

Jun 3, 2026 | 3:35 PM

KAMLOOPS and TK’EMLUPS — The province says a new vehicle crossing is only one of three options it is considering in the wake of the destruction of the Red Bridge.

An arsonist’s flames destroyed the wooden truss bridge connecting the Tk’emlúps reserve with the City of Kamloops in September, 2024.

Local and provincial politicians called for its immediate replacement but the province has yet to decide on a path forward. In April, Tk’emlúps and Kamloops agreed to turn up the pressure on Victoria to build a replacement that includes one vehicle lane in each direction.

No replacement measures were funded in this spring’s provincial budget.

Last month, B.C.’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure announced a nearly month-long consultation process meant to gather feedback from the public. That consultation period began Wednesday (June 3).

In a news release issued Wednesday meant to encourage people to participate in the consultation, the ministry said a “modern replacement crossing” is one of three options being considered. The others are an active-transportation-only crossing (walking, cycling, etc.) and improvements to the surrounding highway network.

The consultation window is open from Wednesday until June 26.

Open houses are planned for Wednesday from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Moccasin Square Gardens on the Tk’emlúps reserve or next Thursday (June 11) from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Sandman Centre’s Kia Lounge.
