Month-long alternative approval process begins on borrowing for proposed Kamloops Search and Rescue headquarters

KAMLOOPS — Tuesday (May 26) marks the beginning of a public assent process related to a proposed new headquarters for Kamloops Search and Rescue (KSAR).

If it passes, the alternative approval process (AAP) will authorize the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) borrowing up to $6.3 million to fund the proposed Regional Search and Rescue Hall and Training Facility on Devick Road in Rayleigh.

The funding will help build the facility, as well as contribute $100,000 annually to fund operations.

In addition to serving as a headquarters for KSAR, the facility would include a training hall for regional search and rescue organizations, as well as a replacement Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) station for the area. The KFR-specific area of the facility will be fully funded by City of Kamloops taxpayers and is not included in the AAP.

Residents in all of the TNRD’s electoral areas and member municipalities are free to return elector response forms if they are opposed to the borrowing proposal.

If 10 per cent of all eligible voters return valid forms before the June 26 deadline, that would put a stop to the borrowing. The TNRD stated in April it would not move to referendum if the AAP fails.
