Westmount Elementary School fire deemed arson; RCMP renew call for tips

KAMLOOPS — RCMP investigators say they are now certain a fire that devastated Westmount Elementary School last fall was intentionally set.

Flames were seen shooting from the school’s roof just before 1:00 a.m. on October 26, 2025.

Kamloops Fire Rescue crews quickly doused the flames, keeping them from spreading to the rest of the building, but the incident resulted in a five-month school closure for cleanup and restoration.

“Fortunately, this was at 1:00 a.m. – or shortly before – and nobody was in the building so nobody was hurt,” BC RCMP spokesperson Staff Sgt. Kris Clark told CFJC Today Wednesday (May 20). “However, it is concerning that somebody would want to damage an elementary school – a place where children go to learn. It really is their social heart.”

Westmount students returned on March 30, having spent the majority of their school year dispersed throughout three nearby schools.

Kamloops RCMP General Investigation Support Team (GIS) was quick to conclude the fire was suspicious. In a news release issued Wednesday, BC RCMP say the fire has now been confirmed as an arson.

Investigators are putting out a call for more evidence from the public.

“We’re looking for anything in the preceding hours, before that fire took place, as well as afterward,” added Clark. “We always look for movements within the area – anything that might be slightly off or suspicious – as well as vehicle movements that can help us develop leads for this particular investigation.”

Anyone with further information is asked to contact Kamloops RCMP at (250) 828-3000 and refer to file number 2025-35751.
