KAMLOOPS — The race to lead the Conservative Party of B.C. is intensifying as candidates work to secure membership support ahead of the party’s upcoming leadership vote on May 30.

One of the contenders, Kamloops Centre MLA Peter Milobar, is campaigning across the province as he looks to position himself as a steady and experienced option for party members.

Milobar previously served as mayor of Kamloops before being elected to the provincial legislature in 2017.

“I’m the same person, I’m standing for the same principles and I’m delivering the same message,” Milobar told CFJC Today recently.

Milobar has emphasized organization and membership engagement as key parts of the race, noting the importance of ensuring supporters are properly verified by the May 20 deadline before the vote takes place.

“We’re going to keep working right up until the very end – getting members verified who have indicated they support me – to make sure they are eligible to vote is the big hurdle myself and other teams are all facing,” says Milobar. “[There are] so many variables in play, in terms of how many people get verified, how many people then vote if they’re verified and how that distributes around the province. It’s really about putting in that work between now and the last voting day on the 29th and making sure we truly get every vote we can.”

Only registered party members are eligible to cast ballots in the leadership contest.

“The optimism a lot of people actually have for our party and for our province… I think we have a great opportunity here – if we get leadership right – to actually be that true government-in-waiting, be able to provide that viable option for people who are fed up with what’s going on provincially and really move forward.

With the Conservative Party of B.C. expects to select its new leader later this month – Iain Black, Caroline Elliott, Milobar, Kerry-Lynne Findlay and Yuri Fulmer have thrown their hats into provincial running.
