SORRENTO, B.C. — Repairs on the grandstand at Sorrento-Blind Bay Community Park are underway and the Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) said work should be done in coming weeks.

CSRD officials said the District has been working with an engineer on a design plan to brace the structure and ensure it is safe for public use as a temporary fix.

The CSRD has lined up a contractor who will begin repair work in the weeks ahead, with the goal of having the bracing done in time for scheduled baseball games and tournaments in June.

Sorrento-Blind Bay Community Park’s grandstand was closed on April 30, when engineers working on the roof replacement discovered structural instability.

“Due to public safety concerns, the CSRD had no choice but to close the grandstand until repairs are complete,” said the CSRD.

“Ground settling over time has contributed to the current problem.”

Regional District officials said the planned grandstand bracing is a temporary solution while staff work with an architect on a possible replacement.

Once designs are complete, the CRSD will include the project into next year’s budget discussions.

Staff have also been working on other projects at Sorrento-Blind Bay Community Park, including repairs to the dugouts at Diamond 3, which is now open to public use again, and improvements to the park’s picnic shelter.
