Recall petition to be issued against OneBC MLA Dallas Brodie, who says it’s fine

“I have also worked on a recall campaign before, against (Premier) David Eby, so it’s part of the democratic process, and so I’m perfectly fine with that,” said Brodie.

The recall bid against Brodie — who was expelled from the B.C. Conservative caucus last year — says she has put her new political party ahead of the needs of her constituents in Vancouver-Quilchena and local priorities like affordability, health care and community services.

Brodie, it said in a supporting statement, “devotes her time and attention to her own political projects.”

“Constituents see little engagement or advocacy for the issues facing families, seniors, renters, and businesses,” it said.

But Brodie said she and her team had “actively responded” to all constituents who reached out to her office.

“I’ve had many, many Zoom meetings with different constituents, and to my knowledge, every single constituent who has approached me to have a problem dealt with has had personal telephone calls with me or in-person meetings with me,” said Brodie.

“In fact, I think I’ve done a better job than most MLAs have,” she added.

She said those behind the campaign are “basically NDP activists who don’t even live in my riding.”

The proponent of the recall is identified as Dorothy Cumming, who provided Elections BC with a post-office box address in Langley, B.C., which is indeed outside Brodie’s riding.

The address matches that of Imagine Surrey, a municipal party running former NDP legislator Mike Starchuk as a candidate for that city’s mayoralty.

Scott Williams, campaign manager for Imagine Surrey, said the party’s financial agent Cindy Dalglish was involved in the Brodie recall, and a phone number he gave for Dalglish matched the number Cumming provided Elections BC.

Dalglish answered a call to that number and declined to be interviewed, saying the recall campaign would look for someone to answer questions.

Williams said financial agents “are free in terms of Elections BC to represent more than one entity, and none of our candidates, none of our staff, Mike, (is) involved.”

Brodie was elected as a B.C. Conservative in October 2024, but was kicked out of the caucus five months later, after then-leader John Rustad said she had mocked residential school survivors.

She formed OneBC with another former Conservative MLA Tara Armstrong, but they later split when Brodie sought to fire a staffer she accused of antisemitism.

Brodie sits in the legislature as an Independent, since two legislators are required to confer party status.

The BC NDP didn’t immediately respond to request for comment.

The 2023 recall bid against Eby failed after Elections BC said it only gathered 2,737 of the required 16,449 signatures.
