High streamflow advisory issued for Shuswap Lake, Clearwater and Blue River

KAMLOOPS — Recent and forecast rain is behind a high streamflow advisory from the BC River Forecast Centre (BCRFC) for much of Interior and Southeast British Columbia, including Shuswap Lake, Clearwater and Blue River.

The BCRFC said a high pressure system across B.C. brought warm temperatures in the last week, but a low pressure troughing will lead to some changing weather conditions through to Saturday (May 16).

“This low pressure is expected to bring dropping temperatures and moderate to heavy rainfall through the interior,” said the BCRFC.

Forecasters expect the rain to persist through the rest of the week, but rainfall could be heavier in some areas, such as mountainous headwater.

“Areas with the heaviest forecast rainfall include the mountainous regions around Revelstoke, Golden, Shuswap Lake, Monashee Mountains, Valhallas, Purcells, and extending north to Clearwater and Blue River, with total precipitation amounts from [Wednesday, May 13] through the end of Saturday of 30 to 70+ millimetres,” said the BCRFC.

Meanwhile, rivers throughout the region are flowing at a high rate due to heavy snowmelt from high temperatures.

“With less capacity in the rivers, runoff from rainfall is expected to lead to high streamflow over the Thursday through Saturday period,” said the BCRFC.

“Fast-flowing rivers pose increased risk to safety. Stay away from rivers and river banks, which can be unstable. Never drive through floodwaters, as unseen hazards and current can be life-threatening.”
