KAMLOOPS — Kamloops and area residents will be able to interact with people from a number of emergency services organizations this Saturday (May 9), when the city hosts its annual Emergency Services Day event.

It will take over the south parking lot at McArthur Island between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., and giving attendees a chance to speak directly to safety professionals. There will be firefighters, police officers, community services officers, paramedics, sheriffs as well as search and rescue personnel on hand.

“All of the emergency response agencies will have their cool trucks and equipment and things… they would use to respond in an emergency,” Ty Helgason, the city’s emergency preparedness manager said. “Lots of information and resources if you’ve got any questions or just want information.”

Saturday’s event will also feature information on the FireSmart process as well as emergency alerts and Emergency Support Services. Attendees are encouraged to bring a reusable bag to collect all of the goodies and safety resources on offer.

The city says to also bring cash as the Lions Club will also be organizing a barbecue during the event.

“We want people to be comfortable with the work that we do and getting out and getting to meet a few of the people who are involved face to face, seeing what their equipment looks like, talking about what their procedures in an emergency might be,” Helgason said.

“It really helps the public be more comfortable with emergency preparedness.”
