Kamloops McDonald’s customer speaks to value of McHappy Day

KAMLOOPS — Jared Moe and his young children biked to McDonald’s in Aberdeen for a bite on Wednesday (May 6).

They knew it was McHappy Day and they wanted to give back.

“My son, when he was young, when he was born, needed heart surgery in Vancouver,” Moe said while two of his children picked away at McNuggets and fries. “We were lucky enough to stay in the Ronald McDonald House for about a month while he had surgery and recovered.”

Ronald McDonald House Charities, a non-profit organization, provides essential support services to families with children receiving treatment at nearby hospitals.

“He was obviously recovering in the hospital for a month” Moe said. “It made it easy for us to bounce back and forth and get rested and have meals as well. It was great.”

Brandy Gozda-Sekhon, owner and operator of six McDonald’s locations in Kamloops and Merritt, was sporting her Big Mac cowboy boots on Wednesday.

“Well, it’s the happiest day of the year,” she said. “It’s my favourite day of the year. Our charity of choice is the Ronald McDonald House and this year we’re donating 100 per cent of our proceeds from McHappy Day to the Family Room right here in Kamloops.”

Big orders are common on McHappy Day.

“Wrabel Brothers Construction just bought 150 Big Macs,” Gozda-Sekhon said. “[Staff are] really busy right now trying to pump out 150 Big Macs, which is awesome.”

Some of the employees taking care of the benevolent hordes were in a giving mood.

“They are excited and a lot of them actually donated their wages today, which is something we never expect,” Gozda-Sekhon said.

McHappy Day runs until 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday.
