TNRD to test emergency alert system

KAMLOOPS — The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) will test its Voyent Emergency Alert System next Thursday (May 7).

The TNRD said the test notice will go out to its electoral areas at 10:30 a.m. on May 7.

Its Voyent Alert system is used to share emergency information, such as evacuation orders, with residents, ensuring timely, accurate information from a trusted source.

“With the sheer speed that misinformation is able to spread online and become hearsay, it’s extremely important for residents to make sure that they are receiving factual information from official sources during an emergency, through channels like Voyent Alert,” said Colton Davies, TNRD communications manager.

“If you come across an image or content online that seems sensational, doesn’t look quite right, or causes an emotional response, don’t share it right away. Take a few moments to fact check from official, trusted sources, and make sure the information you are seeing and sharing is accurate.”

The TNRD said the Voyent Alert system is free to use and non-identifying. It also allows users to pin as many address as they want to receive emergency alerts.

TNRD officials said you can be prepared for an emergency by taking steps to FireSmart your home, knowing what to do in case of an evacuation alert or order, where to find official sources of information, and preparing an emergency grab-and-go-bag.
