KAMLOOPS — Gage Androlick will represent Canada at the World Flying Disc Federation World Junior Ultimate Championships in July in Spain.

The 19-year-old Thompson Rivers University student has come a long way in a few years, coaxed into the game in Grade 10.

“I got drawn in just because my friends were egging me to play just for fun and I got kind of hooked,” Androlick said.

“It’s a great combination for me because I love running and it’s also cutting. It’s similar to football. You’re running routes, essentially, but it’s continuous.”

Duncan Schulz, who coached Androlick at South Kam and with the Helios club program, seized the opportunity to sculpt natural talent.

“He’s got good size and athleticism, but he was very raw,” Schulz said. “His throwing mechanics needed a lot of work. He put a lot of time in. It’s a testament to how far hard work and dedication can take you.”

Added Androlick: “I would definitely recommend playing club if you’re in Kamloops. It’s just so much more fun. It’s my favourite frisbee experience. My coaches have really helped me succeed.”

Androlick experienced a major ultimate growth spurt in Grade 12, helping the Titans win bronze at the provincial championship tournament.

He made a high-point catch to claim the universe point (equivalent to an overtime goal) in the bronze-medal tilt.

The world junior championship is scheduled to run from July 11 to July 18 in Logroño, Spain, and will mark Androlick’s first national team experience.

“I’m just super excited also that I’m representing all of the Okanagan because nobody else made it from around here,” said Androlick, who was picked for the national team after tryouts on the Lower Mainland. “It’s just me and the kids down in Vancouver.”

Androlick said he is raising money to help cover the trip, noting a GoFundMe page is online now.
