KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops-Thompson School District’s (SD 73) Board of Education will discuss its 2026-2027 annual budget on Monday’s meeting (April 27).

The School District anticipates an overall budget of $255,959,384 for 2027 to cover operating costs, capital projects and its special purposes fund, which covers activities like early learning and minor capital projects.

This projection is about $2.5 million less than the amended 2026 annual budget of $258,485,123.

The SD 73 report states that the budget bylaw was drafted based on enrolment projections of 15,985 domestic full-time equivalent (FTE) students, 166 fewer than the 2025-2026 school year, and 180 FTE international students.

School District staff recommend that the Board of Education pass the budget bylaw through first reading, however, they also recommend some considerations to ensure the budget is balanced and some important one-time line items are not missed.

The board will consider prioritizing $470,000 in one-time budget initiatives, including $120,000 for technology replacement, $100,000 in financial assistance for schools, and $250,000 for Enterprise Resource Planning from the 2025-2026 year-end surplus appropriation. This surplus appropriation will be decided in the Board’s September meeting as part of the 2025-2026 Financial Statement approval.

If it passes through this round of discussion, the 2026-2027 Annual Budget Bylaw will come back for the second and third reading at a Special Public Board Meeting on May 11, 2026.
