Kamloops RCMP urging drivers to slow down as weather warms

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP are urging drivers to slow down and share the road as warmer weather brings out more outdoor activities.

The detachment’s Crime Prevention Unit is asking drivers to be especially cautious and be aware of speed limit changes in school and construction zones.

“School zones and many city construction zones are 30 km/hour,” said Sandro Piroddi, Kamloops RCMP crime prevention coordinator.

“We are reminding the community to slow down, be aware of their surroundings and obey speed signs.”

Easing off the accelerator a sure-fire way to ensure wallet doesn’t get any lighter.

“The fines they can range from about $138 to $438 depending on our speeds,” said Ingrid Brokop, ICBC road safety coordinator.

“There is excessive speeding which is over 40 km/hr over the posted speed limit, so you definitely don’t want that. And also keep in mind when you get a speeding infraction, you also get demerits against your drivers license as well.”

On Thursday (April 23), Kamloops RCMP Speed Watch volunteers will be out in the 2200-block of Young Street to remind drivers to slow down through the airport access detour route.

“The detour route cuts through neighbourhoods that see lots of community activity, such as bikes and pedestrians,” said Piroddi.

“We want to be a visible reminder to drivers to slow down and watch for neighbourhood activity on their way to and from the airport.”
