Kamloops RCMP looking to expand crisis response team into rural areas

KAMLOOPS — The Integrated Crisis Response Team (ICRT), formerly known as the Car 40 program, responds to mental health calls, with Mounties and healthcare professionals.

Over the past several years, the program has expanded in Kamloops now with crews available 12 hours per day, seven days per week. With that success, the Kamloops RCMP are looking to bring the program into more of the rural areas surrounding the community.

“Is there a need for it into our rural area? Yes, there is,” Supt. Jeff Pelley told the TNRD Committee of the Whole on Friday (April 17). “We have been repeatedly seeking funding with respect to that into the provincial area with the support of the municipality and our Indigenous leadership as there is a great impact in there. A business case has gone forward with respect to that.”

The RCMP stated Tk’emlups is supportive of bringing the service into their community, with Supt. Pelley awaiting word in his business case and request for funding to bring the program to life.

“We have certainly noticed that there is a need into our rural community and it only makes sense with the percentage of our mental health calls in addition to individuals who may be attended to for a call for service who may be in crisis, that we expand this service into the rural area,” added Pelley. “We had a substantial need for it in the city of Kamloops and I believe we should be addressing that in our rural community and our Indigenous communities.”
