WILLIAMS LAKE — The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) and Williams Lake First Nation will collaborate on a prescribed ecosystem restoration burn near Brunson Lake starting Monday (April 20), if conditions allow.

The BCWS said burning activity in the 32-hectare target area could continue periodically until May 4.

Brunson Lake’s burn area is located about seven kilometres north of Felker Lake and seven kilometres south of Williams Lake First Nation.

The BCWS said smoke and flames will be visible from surrounding areas and to drivers along Dog Creek Road, Chimney Lake Road and Highway 20. Smoke will continue to rise from the impacted area for up to 72 hours after work is completed.

Work will involve crew members igniting ground fuels to remove combustible material and reduce wildfire risks.

BCWS officials said the burn will also restore forest health and strengthen collaboration between Williams Lake First Nation and the Cariboo Fire Centre.

“Fire is a natural process in many of B.C.’s ecosystems. The BC Wildfire Service works regularly with land managers to undertake fuel management activities, including the use of prescribed burns, to help reduce the severity of future wildfires and related threats to communities,” said BCWS officials.

While the BCWS plans to start work on Monday (April 20), the burn will only go ahead if weather conditions are favourable and atmospheric venting allowing smoke to clear quickly

Traffic control may be in the area while burning work is underway and personnel will remain on-site until there is no risk of fire spreading beyond the perimeter.
