Chris Rose Walk for Autism to raise awareness, funds, honour namesake’s legacy

KAMLOOPS — The 15th annual Chris Rose Walk for Autism will take to the streets of Kamloops this Saturday (April 18), to raise awareness and hopefully at least $10,000 for the centre along Tranquille Road.

This year’s walk is the first one being held since the passing of the centre’s namesake, Chris Rose, in September last year. Wanda Eddy, the executive director of the Chris Rose Therapy Centre for Autism (CRTCA), says Chris’ family is expected to be at this year’s walk.

“We’re really excited by the fact that his daughter will be joining us, and we hope a few other family members will be as well,” Eddy said. “If possible, we’re going to get them to lead the walk.”

Eddy expects this year’s walk will be especially meaningful as the Kamloops community gathers to honour Chris’ memory.

“This centre is just really vital for the children that we work with and the adults in our adult program,” Eddy added. “It’s a really vital program, and Chris really believed in supporting individuals to do the best that they can do.”

“Every day, I think about the best we can do for our children and for our adults, and that’s Chris’ legacy.”

Registration begins at 10:00 a.m. Saturday followed by warmups and the walk to McArthur Island at 11:00 a.m. Participants will then return to the Tranquille Road site for a barbecue organized by the North Kamloops Lions Club, with proceeds donated back to the centre.

Over the last 14 years, the walk has raised more than $200,000 in support of the Chris Rose Therapy Centre for Autism. Eddy says it is a critical event as they need to come up with between 40 and 50 per cent of the operating budget each year.

“It is a great event. Yes, it is a fundraiser for us, but it is more than that,” Eddy said. “It’s so people understand what we do in the community. They get to see who we are and so I think that is a really important thing.”

“This community really does support the Chris Rose Therapy Centre for Autism and so it is so exciting to be able to do this event again.”
