Thickened tailings spill reported at New Afton mine west of Kamloops
KAMLOOPS — The parent company of the New Afton mine just west of Kamloops is informing the public about an inadvertent tailings release at the mine.
In a news release issued Thursday (April 16), Coeur Mining says the incident happened Wednesday morning “when a planned conveyance did not route to the tailings storage facility and was drained to a nearby containment area.”
The company says a further 219 cubic metres of thickened tailings spilled beyond the containment area, but stayed within the mine permit boundary.
