AAPs on borrowing for McMaster purchase, Tranquille Phase 3 to begin April 20

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops residents will have a 38-day window to register their opposition to long-term borrowing for a pair of big ticket projects already underway.

At Tuesday’s (April 14) regular meeting, council voted to authorize alternative approval processes (AAPs) for a property purchase at 965 McMaster Way and Phase 3 of the Tranquille Road Sanitary Main and Road Enhancement Project.

The long-term borrowing for the McMaster Way property would max out at $16.75 million, while borrowing for the Tranquille project is set at $9 million.

Corporate Services Director David Hallinan told council borrowing is sound financial practice.

“If you start saving money to try to buy something, two years from now it will be more expensive and three years from now it will be even more expensive, so you’re always behind,” said Hallinan. “This allows us to buy something today – no different than anybody who has bought a house over the course of their lives.”

As part of the AAP, voters must register their opposition to the borrowing proposal.

They will get a chance to do that starting next Monday, April 20, with the last day to submit elector forms on May 29. The results will be reported to council on June 9.

CFJC Today will have more on the AAP approval Wednesday.
