Kamloops MP Caputo hoping for federal cash in Red Bridge rebuild

KAMLOOPS — As the City of Kamloops and Tkemlúps te Secwepemc prepare to ramp up pressure on the provincial government for a replacement for the Red Bridge, a Kamloops member of parliament wants the federal government to chip in as well.

The 88-year-old wooden truss bridge was destroyed by an arson fire in Sept. 2024 and Kamloops-Thompson-Nicola MP Frank Caputo feels there is a role for the federal government to play in its rebuild.

“I’m actually seeking input on that right now as we speak,” Caputo said. “It’s something I was speaking with my staff about just last week. I would love to see federal money come in to help with the Red Bridge. I know this is largely a provincial issue but with that being said, people look to leadership from their federal leaders.”

On Tuesday (April 7), Prime Minister Mark Carney announced $51 billion in funding over 10 years to address infrastructure gaps across Canada. About $28 billion is meant “for the construction and rehabilitation of essential local infrastructure” like roads, bridges, water systems and community centres.

“[Federal involvement in the Red Bridge] is something that I hope to broach with the minister of infrastructure [Gregor Robertson],” Caputo added. “I have written to him in the past and he has not gotten back to me. I hope this time will be different if and when we do look at this.”

It’s been a year since all of the debris was cleared from the Thompson River, and the province says geotechnical, environmental and archaeological work is scheduled to take place this spring.

A conceptual design of the ‘preferred options’ for a replacement bridge was initially expected to come this spring, but the province now plans to seek public input on a replacement structure this year.

“The timelines, to me, seem very long,” Caputo added of the Red Bridge project. “It’s something I’m hearing about directly and indirectly, and I think it’s something we need to look at federally.”
