Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Doerkson’s 100 Mile House hospital ER petition quickly garners 1,500+ signatures

100 MILE HOUSE, B.C. — A petition started by Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Lorne Doerkson has already garnered more than 1,500 signatures since it launched Monday morning (April 6), calling for action following repeated closures of the emergency department in 100 Mile House.

The emergency department is closed until 8:00 p.m. Monday evening, marking the 16th time this year that the community has been forced to seek care more than an hour away in Williams Lake.

Stories shared to the petition already speaking to changing their habits due to the challenges.

“That is the frustration I think I’m having, and I think the reality is that this hospital cannot be closed,” Doerkson told CFJC News. “It’s just too far to help.”

“Some of the comments and some of the messages I’ve received regarding this petition are shocking. People who are avoiding treatment because they are afraid the hospital may not be open when they might need it. Parents who are extra careful at the playground with their children.”

The 100 Mile House District General Hospital is the latest Interior hospital to fall victim to repeated closures, following in the footsteps of Merritt, Lillooet and Clearwater. While similar solutions from those hospitals have been brought up, Doerkson is still waiting for action.

“The suggestion we need to be making better use nurse practitioners that are already in the community, that is an absolute given in my mind,” Doerkson added. “They are willing and able, Interior Health is now considering that a little bit more. I think there is certainly something to be said about rural pay, whether it is in northern B.C. or whether it’s in 100 Mile House.”

Doerkson plans to present the petition to the Minister of Health, Josie Osborne, in the B.C. legislature next week.
