KAMLOOPS — Vintage car enthusiasts will emerge from their winter slumber this weekend as the Kamloops chapter of the Vintage Car Club of Canada is preparing to host its annual Easter Drive and Car Show.

Car owners and enthusiasts will gather at McArthur Island at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday (April 2) in preparation for the start of the car show season. They’ll eventually make their way towards the Riverside Park band shell, where the vehicles will be on display between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.

“It’s the first start of the season for guys and girls to get their vehicles out. We take a lot of pride in organizing this event,” organizer Rich Vandermey told CFJC Today.

The free community event has been held for the past five decades, though Vandermey notes it has had to take on a new format post-COVID.

“It used to be a parade with an RCMP escort, but we can’t do that anymore,” Vandermey said. “But we still make an effort to attend and drive by seniors homes that maybe can’t get out. The drive includes Westsyde, which usually they come out and sit in their chairs along the route.”

People are asked to register when they get to McArthur Island on Sunday, so organizers can ensure there is space for them at Riverside Park. Vandermey added people can expect to find vehicles of all makes and models this weekend.

“Nowadays a collector can be anything that’s 25 years old,” Vandermey said. “It’s not necessary the 20s and 30s cars anymore and we – as part of the club – all have a common interest in the car scene and this event is open to non-members as well.”
