Taylor Swift is being sued for trademark infringement over her twelfth album title The Life Of A Showgirl. Maren Wade, who appeared on America’s Got Talent, filed the lawsuit Monday in California federal court against Swift and UMG Recordings. Wade has used Confessions Of A Showgirl since 2014 for her Las Vegas Weekly column, podcast, and live performances featuring pop and jazz music. Her trademark covers stage performances, theatrical productions, and TV. The U.S. Patent & Trademark Office declined Swift’s trademark application, citing confusion with Wade’s existing mark due to the shared phrase “of a Showgirl” in entertainment contexts. She claims consumers now believe she copied Swift, undermining her brand. Swift must now choose between purchasing Wade’s trademark rights or pursuing litigation. Established trademark holders generally maintain priority over newer applications.
