KAMLOOPS — An abandoned bear cub found near Heffley Lake, about 43 kilometres north of Kamloops, will now live in the care of the Northern Lights Wildlife Society in Smithers after being treated at the BC Wildlife Park.

In a post to social media last week, the Northern Lights Wildlife Society said the male cub was found alone on Sunday (March 22).

Rescue volunteers left the cub overnight in hopes that his mother would return, but by morning, he was unresponsive and cold in the same spot.

After rescuers transported the cub to the BC Wildlife Park in Kamloops, the the Northern Lights Wildlife Society says the team then took him into their care and went to Quesnel to meet other volunteers for bear milk replacer. The team then continued their journey to the Northern Lights Wildlife Society facility in Smithers.

Volunteers used an incubator to warm up the five-to-six-week-old cub and fed him 20 millilitres of formula every three hours.

The Northern Lights Wildlife Society says the team returned home at around 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, and the three lbs cub is settling well.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story indicated the bear cub would be living in the care of the BC Wildlife Park in Kamloops. The Northern Lights Wildfire Society contacted CFJC Today and noted the cub is at the group’s shelter in Smithers. The story was corrected on March 31, 2026.
