TAPPEN B.C. — Firefighters rescued a woman from her burning home in Tappen on Friday morning (March 27).

The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) said crews with the Tappen Sunnybrae Fire Department responded to reports of a house fire along Mikkelson Frontage Road at about 10 a.m.

Firefighters, with support from the Shuswap and White Lake Departments, arrived on the scene to find the home filled with smoke and were told about the woman trapped inside.

The CSRD said firefighters entered the home and quickly contained the blaze within the room where it sparked and pulled the woman to safety.

She received first aid from crew members and South Shuswap First Responders before BC Ambulance Paramedics took over her care.

The woman was air lifted to a hospital by a helicopter for treatment of smoke inhalation.

Columbia Shuswap Regional District Deputy Regional Fire Chief Len Youden said this incident is a reminder to take fire safety at home seriously.

“We’d like to alert residents to the importance of having working smoke alarms in each bedroom and every floor of your home,” said Youden.

“Also, remember to conduct regular, monthly tests of these devices to make sure they are working properly.”

CSRD officials said the woman’s condition is unknown at this time and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
