UPDATE: Coquihalla reopens after overnight closure caused by ‘non-compliant commercial vehicles’

MERRITT, B.C. — (UPDATE 11:00 a.m.): The Coquihalla Highway has reopened in both directions between Hope and Merritt, ending a nearly 14 hour closure that is being blamed on “non-compliant commercial vehicles” that did not chain up.

“Expect sections of compact snow and slushy conditions,” an update from DriveBC Friday (March 26) said. “Drive to conditions.”

The highway had been closed in both directions since about 9:00 p.m. last night, as the area was inundated by heavy snowfall.

Southbound lanes were closed between the Zopkios brake check and Mine Creek Road exits due to a vehicle incident, while northbound lanes were closed between the Zopkios and Portia exits “due to non-compliant commercial vehicles at [a] mandatory chain up location.”

A snowfall warning on the Hope to Merritt section of the Coquihalla has been lifted by Environment Canada. While the initial warning was calling for about 15 centimetres of snow, a revised forecast this morning said about 25 centimetres of snow had fallen since last night, and a further 5 to 10 centimetres was expected this morning.

That snowfall warning also called on drivers to prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating – possibly hazardous – travel conditions.
