KAMLOOPS — Environment Canada has upgraded a special weather statement that was in place for the Thompson-Nicola and parts of the Cariboo to a wind warning.

The weather office is now calling for strong southwesterly wind gusts of up to 90 km/h late Tuesday (March 24) afternoon to near midnight. It’s up from previous forecasts which were calling for gusts of up to 80 km/h.

The wind warning covers the South Thompson and Nicola areas as well as the Cariboo from Williams Lake to Clinton and parts of the Central Chilcotin (near Puntzi Mountain) and Southwest Chilcotin (communities near the Coastal Mountains).

It is also in effect for the Coquihalla Highway from Merritt to Kamloops.

“A strong Pacific low pressure system will move across the B.C. Interior this evening,” Environment Canada said. “Strong southwesterly winds gusting up to 90 km/h are expected to develop late this afternoon and continue until midnight.”

“Winds will ease after midnight and into Wednesday morning as the system departs.”

Environment Canada says the winds could cause power outages and push around high-sided vehicles. It’s also urging people to secure all loose objects.

Special weather statements remain in place for the North Thompson, Fraser Canyon, the Hope to Merritt section of the Coquihalla and parts of the Fraser Valley.
