Rogers Pass highway closure extends into third day

REVELSTOKE — The Trans-Canada Highway closure through Rogers Pass is continuing into its third day as avalanche risk in the area remains high.
Parks Canada said yesterday’s (March 19) avalanche control work has seen pisitive results, allowing the highway to open temporarily overnight, but poor weather conditions made it necessary to extend the closure into another day.
In a social media post, Parks Canada said significant rainfall and snowpack conditions made avalanche control by artillery less effective and heli-bombing impossible.
Officials say temperatures need to drop or natural avalanche activity must decrease for the highway to reopen.
