KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops has broken a daily temperature record for the second day in a row as it remains mired in a spell of unseasonably warm weather brought on by an atmospheric river on the coast.

Preliminary figures from Environment Canada shows the temperature in Kamloops reached 21.2 C on Thursday (March 19) afternoon, surpassing the previous 79-year-old record of 21.1 C set in 1947, with records going back to 1890.

Kamloops also broke a 116-year-old record on Wednesday as the mercury topped out at 21.8 C on March 18. It eclipsed the old March 18 record of 21.1 C set in 1910.

The communities of Summerland (19.5 C) and Vernon (18.6 C) also set new daily temperature records on Thursday afternoon. Summerland’s previous record of 18.3 C was set in 1928, while Vernon’s previous record – also 18.3 C – was set in 2024.

Environment Canada is forecasting a high of 21 C on Friday, before conditions return to seasonal levels this weekend.

Forecaster Brian Proctor told CFJC Today on Thursday that its possible that a third daily temperature record could be set in Kamloops this week as the ongoing atmospheric river is bringing unseasonable warmth to communities in the interior.

“It’s going to end sometime [Friday], but in general, it’s stormy weather on the coast, stormy weather approaching portions of the interior and very warm temperatures for much of the southwest interior,” Proctor said.

“It’s been a very active weather pattern across B.C. and I think many people in the province are looking for some relief from it.”
